Immediate Steps After an Animal Bite
Time is critical. Follow these steps right away to reduce your risk of infection and rabies.
Do not wait for symptoms — rabies is fatal once they appear. Seek care immediately.
Wash the Wound
Scrub the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. This is the single most effective first step.
Apply Antiseptic
Apply Betadine or 70% isopropyl alcohol to the wound after washing to reduce bacterial contamination.
Get Vaccinated
Visit our clinic immediately for anti-rabies vaccination. Do not delay — early treatment is essential.
Complete Your Schedule
Follow the full vaccine schedule (Day 0, 3, 7, 28). Incomplete vaccination leaves you unprotected.
- Do NOT apply herbal remedies, toothpaste, or any home remedy to the wound.
- Do NOT suck out the wound or attempt to cauterize it.
- Do NOT ignore the bite even if the animal appears healthy.
- Do NOT wait for symptoms — rabies is fatal once they appear.
